No librarian is an island

I have given my blog a title taken from John Donne’s famous poem about libraries (I may have changed it slightly):

No librarian is an island entire of itself; every one
is a piece of the profession, a part of the stereotype;
if a distant branch be washed away by budget cuts, the librarian
is the less, as well as if a community were, as
well as any manner of thy readers in thine own
authority were; any library’s death diminishes me,
because I am involved in libraries.
And therefore never send to know for whom
the budget tolls; it tolls for thee.
